Knowledge Organisers

Knowledge Organisers - what are they?

A knowledge organiser is a sheet of key information that is linked to each topic. It will usually include:

  • A list of key subject specific vocabulary that children should understand and be able to use in their explanations. These are not 'spellings to learn but words to understand;
  • A scientific diagram with labelled parts;
  • A historical timeline;
  • A map labelled with features or places;
  • Information on key historical figures.

How do we use them at home?

Knowledge organisers are not homework sheets to be completed and returned - they are a point of information to use through the school term. They could be kept with a child's reading record, with their learning log or pinned on the fridge or a bedroom wall.

There are a variety of ways to use them at home. Some ideas are:

  • Have them to hand when completing learning logs so that key vocabulary is used;
  • Check children's understanding of new vocabulary;
  • Use as a conversation starter with your children about what they are learning at school.

Thank you for your support with your child's learning.
