Y1 - Elephants

Welcome to Elephants!

The curriculum

Every morning we do Handwriting, Literacy, Maths and Read, Write Inc where we learn lots of new skills and put them into practise. We also begin the year by practising these activities while we choose to learn in different areas of the classroom. In the afternoon we practise our spellings and do our Topic work. Once a week we also do PHSE and P.E.

This year we will be covering the following topics:-

History - old toys, The Great Fire of London and Remembrance Day.

Science - materials, the seasons, our senses, animals and plants.

Geography - hot and cold countries, our local environment and the weather.

Within our topics we also develop our skills in R.E. Computers, Design Technology, Art and Music.

We also go on some exciting trips which always support and extend our learning experiences in the classroom.

We do P.E. every Wednesday (for the first half term) when we enjoy doing Games, Dance, or Gymnastics. Then this will be changed to different days as the year continues. It is a great idea to keep our P.E kit in school all week in case we decide to do other P.E related activities on different days.

Homework

We put our homework sheet on Google Classroom every Friday .Here you can find out our question of the week, Big Maths facts to learn and also our list of spellings for our spelling test which is also every Friday.  Homework needs to be returned by the following Friday.

In the Elephants we love reading and would like everyone to try and read at home for 10 minutes every day. Remember being able to talk about the events, characters and information contained in the text is just as important as being able to read the words.

Library books

All Elephants can borrow a library book of their choice from our school library and put the book into our special grey tray when it is ready to be changed.

Elmer our Elephant.

Every week one of the Elephants can take home our class mascot Elmer for the weekend. He comes complete with a book where you can record his adventures to share with the class upon his return on Monday morning.

Volunteer helpers in class

We welcome all volunteer helpers to work with us in our classroom after completing our school induction process. Please see the school office for more details.
