Y6L - Orangutans

Welcome to Y6L

Orangutans

We are a caring, motivated and enthusiastic class who love to learn. We try to challenge and push ourselves during lesson time and always present our work to the highest possible standard. We endeavour to set a good example to the younger children in our school and help around school wherever possible. We always work as a team and we take collective responsibility for our learning and class behaviour.

Literacy

In year 6, we refer to lots of Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar (SpaG) rules in order to make our work the best it can be! Children will be learning all about the specific grammar and punctuation terminology, drawing on their knowledge from years 3, 4 and 5. There are many more skills that we focus on too.

Maths

In maths we consolidate all our learning from years 3 to 5, and go that little bit further with some new concepts such as algebra, ratio and statistics.  Times table knowledge is of huge importance in much of the work we do in year six, as it can help us with fractions; calculating area and volume; working with ratio; long division and much much more.  Therefore we all need to be fluent in our times tables up to 12x12

Homework

In year 6, we post homework every Friday on Google classroom  to be handed in before the following Friday.

Reading

We expect children to read with an adult at home for 10mins, 5 times a week and alone as much as possible.  This will help children maintain and improve their fluency, expression and comprehension.    In school we mainly read in groups with a teacher once a week, and focus more on understanding the text, inference, noticing patterns and commenting on the author’s intentions.

Children are responsible for changing their own reading book when needed, a teacher or teaching assistant will advise when your child is ready to move a book band and will monitor children’s targets.

PE

Our PE day is Tuesday. Please ensure that PE kit (t-shirt, shorts, pumps/trainers) is in school and labelled with your child’s name.  Please also remove any earrings and ensure children with long hair have a bobble to tie their hair back. PE will always be outside except in exceptionally bad weather, so a tracksuit and change of outside shoes is required.

Transition

During year 6 we endeavour to prepare all our children for their transition to secondary school to ensure this is as smooth as possible. We work very closely with our feeder secondary school – Ecclesfield Secondary – and our children have many opportunities to visit the school to meet staff and become familiar with the building. We encourage all our children to attend open days at our local secondary schools and these will be authorised as educational visits by school.
